Professor Musa Manzi grew up in Ndwedwe, a rural village in KwaZulu Natal. He is an associate professor in Geophysics and a Director of the Seismic Research Centre in the School of Geosciences at WITS at Wits University. He is the first black South African to obtain a PhD and professorship in Geophysics. He holds a BSc degree (2007) (majoring in Physics, Mathematics and Computer science), BSc honours degree (2008), Master’s degree (2011), and PhD degree (2013) in geophysics (all from the University of the Witwatersrand).
Nduvho Ramulongo is passionate about education development and research in South Africa. She is a PhD candidate and researcher at the Centre for Researching Education and Labour (REAL Centre) on the Skills for an Industry project, funded by the National Swiss Science Foundation.
Coming from rural Kwa-Zulu Natal, Musa Manzi faced abject poverty while growing up. He had to sleep in the laboratory when he was a student at Wits University. But despite all these obstacles, Dr. Manzi still qualified with a PhD in Geophysics.
Prof. Musa Manzi, senior researcher at the Wits School of Geosciences, has won the Africa Award for Research Excellence in Earth and Ocean Science, in the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Honours Programme.
