Professor Musa Manzi grew up in Ndwedwe, a rural village in KwaZulu Natal. He is an associate professor in Geophysics and a Director of the Seismic Research Centre in the School of Geosciences at WITS at Wits University. He is the first black South African to obtain a PhD and professorship in Geophysics. He holds a BSc degree (2007) (majoring in Physics, Mathematics and Computer science), BSc honours degree (2008), Master’s degree (2011), and PhD degree (2013) in geophysics (all from the University of the Witwatersrand). He has more than 20 postgraduate students under his supervision and co-supervision, 9 MSc and 11 PhDs. He has travelled extensively, providing invited workshops and lecturers at international conferences and universities in Sweden, Australia, Germany, Austria, Spain, Mozambique, Pakistan and USA. He has collected a host of local and global awards for his internationally ground breaking work on 3D seismic reflection technique, which is central to South African gold and platinum mining, the latest being the 2018 TW Kambule-NSTF Emerging Researcher Award. In 2016, He was the first recipient of the 2016 International Award for Research Excellence in Earth and Oceans Science, which was presented at the American Geophysical Union Fall meeting held in December 2016 in San Francisco, California. In 2013, he was the first African scientist to win an international award for the Best Paper published in Geophysics; the award was presented in Houston, Texas, USA. In 2014 and 2015, he was elected by Mail and Guardian as one of the top 200 Young South Africans. In 2016, he was listed by Brand South African as one of the top 40 South Africans (under 40) who have changed South Africa through public services. In 2016 and 2017, he was elected by Avance Media as one of the top 100 Most Influential Young South Africans. He is an honorary member of the Golden Key International Honour Society since 2014. He is the Founder of an orphanage home ‘AMAQHAWE’ in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Dr Musa Manzi Foundation. Prof. Manzi is a respected media personality and has appeared on Radio 702; SABC 1; Carte Blanche; YFM; Power FM; Khozi FM and a host of other media platforms and business publications like Star Newspaper, Mail and Guardian, and Mining Weekly.
