Dr Musa Manzi Foundation presents a variety of awards and prizes to recognise excellence in individual students, at both basic and higher education levels, these students should exhibit special attributes to become future South African leaders and scientists in education, research and innovation.

We envisage that rewarding hard work, diligence and excellence in education can further attract young people to pursue careers within STEM-related fields. Each year, we honor these exceptional individuals and emerging leaders at our Annual Dr Musa Manzi Foundation Annual Meeting.

Award Prizes

Professor Lew Ashwal

Professor Lew Ashwal

The Lewis D. Ashwal Continental Award was established in 2019 following a donation to the Dr Musa Manzi Foundation from Prof. Lewis D. Ashwal. Throughout his career, Prof. Ashwal’s broad research interests and expertise relate to the large-scale origin and evolution of continental lithospheres. It is for this reason, and in honour of Prof. Ashwal’s lifelong commitment to the development of African science, and the advancement of this continent’s young African scientists, that this award carries the title of The Lewis D. Ashwal Continental Award.

The prize will be awarded to the 3rd and 4th year Wits Geoscience students who have demonstrated excellence in scientific research related to large-scale origin and evolution of continental lithospheres.

Professor Musa Manzi

In 2016, Professor Musa Manzi was the first recipient of Africa Award for Research Excellence in Earth Science at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting Honors Ceremony, held on 14 December 2016 in San Francisco, California. The award honors an early-career scientist from the African continent for “completing significant work that shows the focus and promise of making outstanding contributions to research in Earth and Space sciences.” Prof Manzi has used his AGU prize to support a number of projects within the foundation, including Musa Mathematics Award to top mathematics achievers between grade 8 to 12 at his former high school in Ndwedwe, Mabayana High School, in KwaZulu-Natal Province to promote mathematics at the School.

Professor Musa Manzi was the first learner in the history of Mabayana High School to obtain 100% in Mathematics in Grade 12. It is for this reason, and in honour of Prof. Musa Manzi’s commitment to the development of Youth in Ndwendwe, that this award carries the title of Manzi Mathematics Award.
