Born into a large family from a disadvantaged rural community, rejected by his father and bullied by his peers, Musa Manzi had the odds stacked against him in life. Yet he showed enormous resilience to become the first black South African to graduate with a PhD in Geophysics.

Professor Musa Manzi grew up in Ndwedwe, a rural village in KwaZulu Natal. He is an associate professor in Geophysics and a Director of the Seismic Research Centre in the School of Geosciences at WITS at Wits University. He is the first black South African to obtain a PhD and professorship in Geophysics. He holds a BSc degree (2007) (majoring in Physics, Mathematics and Computer science), BSc honours degree (2008), Master’s degree (2011), and PhD degree (2013) in geophysics (all from the University of the Witwatersrand).
