Belinda Huntley holds a PhD in Mathematics and Science Education. Her research interests include assessment, curriculum development, distance education (online), mathematics competitions/ olympiads and epidemiology. Belinda has 40 years teaching experience in secondary schools and tertiary institutions, in face-to-face and online distance environments. During her teaching career, she was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Convocation Distinguished Teacher Award at Wits University, Golden Key International Award, Department of Science and Technology ‘Women in Science’ Fellowship Award and a nomination in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology at UNISA for the Tuition Award.
Belinda is a member of several professional associations and is currently on the Council for the South African Mathematical Society (SAMS), as well as on the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) Advisory Committee on Mathematics (ACM). She was also on the Local Organising Committee for the 2019 Conference of the International Group of Psychology and Mathematics Education (PME) hosted by South Africa. Belinda is also the Gauteng Regional Coordinator for the Siyanqoba Maths Olympiad Training Centre. Both the Wits Siyanqoba Junior and Senior A teams won the SA Maths Team competition in 2019.
Belinda has written study material for undergraduate mathematics and mathematics teaching modules, for contact and distance universities. She has presented at several conferences, both nationally and internationally. In 2018, she was invited as a plenary speaker to the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA) conference. She has supervised and mentored several postgraduate students. Her publications include 19 short papers and 13 journal articles in accredited journals. She has presented several workshops at secondary and tertiary levels.
Belinda has been a sub-examiner and marker for the IEB matric examinations. She has authored 8 chapters in mathematics and maths education books; and co-authored a prescribed mathematics textbook for first year undergraduate mathematics courses. Belinda is passionate about community service and participates in several community engagement mathematics projects.
